Penile Doppler

The patients who are suffering from Erectile Dysfunction either due to aging or due to diseases like Diabetes are advised by the doctors to undergo Penile Doppler Test. In this test Colour Ultrasound Machine is used to measure the flow of blood in the Corpus Cavernosa. The male penis has two blood vessels called Corpus Cavernosa. When a person experiences sexual arousal, the blood flows into the Corpus Cavernosa and the penis become hard. Sexual intercourse is possible due to this erection in the penis. Diseases like diabetes causes the blood vessels to shrink and sufficient blood flow does not take place in the penis which results in Erectile Dysfunction.

Some patients would experience Erectile Dysfunction even at a young age like mid twenties which could be due to physiological problems or due to psychological reasons. Penile Colour Doppler test would give values for arterial blood flow and also whether there is any venous leakage. This helps your doctor to understand the reasons behind erectile dysfunction or those who can get erection but cannot hold it for sufficient length of time.

How the Test is Done

When you arrive at the centre, the doctor would explain you about the test and then take your consent for performing the test. You would be taken into the ultrasound room and asked to lie on the couch. You would have your penis exposed and the radiologist would perform the utrasound scan on flaccid penis. During this study the anatomy of the penis would be examined. This study would take around 15 minutes. After this you would be given oral medication like Viagra or Cialis which would cause erection in the penis within 30 minutes. Some of the patients who have been using these medications and are now not responding even to the maximum permissible dose would be given Papavarine Injection in the penis. Most of the patients would get an erection with this injection. Ideally 60 ml of Papavarine is to be injected in the penis but we do it with 30 ml as higher dose can cause priapism in some patients.

Once you get erection with the medication, the doctor would again do the colour doppler test on erect penis. This study would reveal the arterial blood flow and would take around 30 minutes. When the penis starts to become soft, the doctor is able to evaluate any kind of venous leakage.

Cost of Penile Doppler Test

The Penile Doppler Test is not done by all the radiologists. Very few radiologists have the expertise in doing this test. The cost of penile doppler test using oral medication is Rs. 5,000 while the cost of Penile Doppler Test using Papavarine Injection is Rs. 5,500/-
