Mammography is the process of using low-energy X-rays to examine the human breast and is used as a diagnostic and a screening tool. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer, typically through detection of characteristic masses and microcalcifications.
Breast Cancer is the second most prevelant cancer in India but the good thing about breast cancer is that if diagnosed early it is completely curable. Mammography is the second step for early detection of breast cancer after self breast examination. If you are above 40 years of age you should get mammography done atleast once a year. However if there is a lump or breast discharge then it is very imperative that you conact a good Breast Clinic and follow the guidance of the breast disease specialist. Sometimes doctor may advise a breast ultrasound or MR Mammogram for further information.
At Suraj Diagnostic Centre we have one of the most advanced and best digital mammography machine.
Types Of Mammography Exams
There are two types of Mammography done at Suraj Diagnostic Centre, Gurgaon which are:
Screening Mammography - Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancers because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them.
Diagnostic Mammography - Diagnostic mammography is used to evaluate a patient with abnormal clinical findings—such as a breast lump or lumps—that have been found by the woman or her doctor. Diagnostic mammography may also be done after an abnormal screening mammogram in order to evaluate the area of concern on the screening exam.
Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam. These can appear on the mammogram as calcium spots. Describe any breast symptoms or problems to the technologist performing the exam. Always inform your doctor or x-ray technologist if there is any possibility that you are pregnant.
Prevent Breast Cancer
Dr Sumita Singh is talking about the importance of Breast Ultrasound over Mammography in the females below the age of 40 years and how this can result in early detection of Breast Cancer in women below the age of 40 who have dense breasts and Mammography doesn't give accurate information in such females.
However Mammography is the best diagnostic modality for scanning the breasts in women above the age of 40 years. Excessive reliance on these diagnostic machines is also not a good idea and one must see a breast specialist before deciding to go for any kind of testing
